Metronome Subdivision Exercises That Build Real Speed
There are two ways to play faster against a metronome. The obvious one is to raise the BPM. The one most players skip is to keep the BPM fixed and pack more notes into each beat — quarters, then eighths, then triplets, then sixteenths. That's subdivision practice, and it builds control the tempo dial can't.
How it works
Set the metronome to a comfortable tempo — say 80 BPM — and play the same passage at each subdivision level, staying locked to the click:
- One note per click (quarters) — establish the pulse.
- Two notes per click (eighths) — twice the speed, same beat.
- Three notes per click (triplets) — the level that exposes uneven timing.
- Four notes per click (sixteenths) — your target density.
Because the beat never moves, your internal clock stays rock-solid while your hands do the speeding up. You feel exactly where evenness falls apart — usually at triplets — instead of guessing.
Why it beats just cranking the tempo
Raising BPM changes two things at once: the pulse and your note speed. Subdivisions isolate the second. You keep a stable reference, so ragged timing has nowhere to hide, and you build the feel of "fast" without losing the beat. It's the difference between playing fast and rushing.
A simple weekly loop
- Find the highest subdivision you can play cleanly at your base tempo.
- Spend most reps there, one level of density at a time.
- Once sixteenths are clean at 80, nudge the base tempo up 5 BPM and repeat.
Track the level, not just the tempo
Subdivision progress is real progress, but it hides from a plain BPM number — clean sixteenths at 80 is faster playing than sloppy sixteenths at 95. Note the base tempo and the highest clean subdivision together so you can see it climb.
